The images are not of painting, but of "Drawing" and its okay to start with a manga style. The more you practice drawing though, you will get better and can experiment with different drawing styles. Everybody can develop a unique style.
As for your skill level, your sketching is actually quite good. You just need to practice seeing "what is actually there" in front of you to draw. I thought you did ok for this exercise.
